Every time I see any of my favorite Richard scenes from past seasons, all I can think of is that he’s dead now. They killed him. It ruins it for me.
Me too! This exactly! And it crushes me because I love him so much and I can’t even bear to watch the show at all now. I hope that gets better with time.
I feel exactly the same way! It’s so ridiculous but when it happened, the only things I could post or reblog or rant about, lol were related to Richard and my frustration with how they got rid of him on the show. I even had to step away from tumblr for a while because it was too upsetting. I don’t watch a ton of shows, so when I do, I stick with them but I’ve never connected to a character the way I have with Richard and now that he’s gone, I just lost any desire to keep up with the show the way I have in the past. For all the reasons you mentioned, for the reasons someone else mentioned about bad writing and not keeping up with the narrative they set up, all of it! It’s just not going to be the same anymore. Shame.
'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 to End the Series?
According to the report, showrunner Terence Winter’s interest in moving on to his Mick Jagger-produced, Bobby Cannavale-starring record executive drama could take Winter off ‘Boardwalk Empire’ after the fifth season, while HBO works internally to set a number of episodes for the likely final season.
If this is true, and TW is already thinking about another series, that might help to explain how scattered and forced so much of S4 was. It also would help to explain why he wouldn’t care that he violated the narrative arc they’d set up for Richard and just killed him off for the shock value in the S4 finale. He just doesn’t care anymore and wants to wrap up BE and move on.
I read this a few hours ago but didn’t have the time to respond. I completely agree…matter fact I was thinking the same thing as I was reading this earlier. You’d think instead of killing Richard off, he’d just let him move on considering how he may be trying to wrap up the show. If this rumor turns out to be true, then TW really is an asshole.

“So if people ever look down upon you for crying for fictional characters, you should give them a gentle, pitying look and feel bad for them. If they’ve never cried for a fictional character, then they’ve never loved one (and what a joy that is). If they’ve never cried at a book, a movie, a piece of music, then they’ve missed one of the great pleasures life has to offer. Just because fiction does not contain things that are real doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain truth, and we find it through the alchemy of our tears.”
